Club characteristics
For those of you that have just started the game and have no real perception of the characteristics of the golf club itself, please read on.
Grip
Remember this is the only part of the golf club that is in direct contact with your body. It is important to have well conditioned grips and the correct thickness to match your hand size, these two key factors are said to reduce your total score on the golf course by 3 – 4 shots.
Shaft
This area can get very confusing for people starting the game. There are a colossal amount of shafts available on the market today each offering something different. Generally shafts are available for Juniors, Ladies, Seniors and Men. These will be available in Light, Regular, Stiff and Extra Stiff. You need to get the shaft suited to your swing speed and strength. If you find yourself unsure come see one of the professionals here and we would be more than happy to guide you.
Clubhead
Think of the clubhead like a foot.
This is the area of the club that will identify the number of the iron you are using. The lower the number, the lower the loft meaning the ball will fly lower but further due to the shaft being longer. The higher the number, the higher the loft meaning the ball will fly higher but not as far due to the shaft being shorter.
Heel
For a right handed club this is the area on the left of the clubhead. Addressing the ball out of the heel will result in the club digging into the ground when the ball is struck and turning the shot over to the left.
Centre
The ball must be aligned out the center of the face for every shot you play. This will create better shot accuracy and a more consistent strike on the ball.
Toe
For a right handed club this is the far right side of the clubhead. Addressing the ball out of the toe will result in the club twisting and opening when the shot is struck resulting in the ball traveling right.
“Keep these important facts in mind when setting up to the shot. By doing so your are much more likely to strike the ball more consistently in the desired direction”
Good luck
